Tribute to a Pioneer:
RTDC Founding Visionary
Harlyn Halvorson
Harlyn Halvorson, PhD, was the RTDC’s guiding light. Recognizing the positive impact on the Cape Cod region that could result from nurturing discoveries and new technologies from the internationally recognized marine and environmental research community in Woods Hole, Harlan’s tireless vision and efforts, in collaboration with fellow RTDC co-founder Bill Zammer, led to the establishment of the RTDC in 2007.
Harlyn was an active and defining figure in the field of microbiology over four decades. An elected member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, his prestigious academic career reached a pinnacle in his role as Director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
In his retirement, in addition to establishing the successful Falmouth Technology Park in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Harlyn applied his substantial expertise and influence to secure RTDC’s initial funding, build the organization’s credibility with the institutions with which the RTDC now has thriving affiliations, and establish the RTDC as a mechanism by which to leverage the Cape’s unusually rich research and technology assets to create and improve opportunities to bring technology-based economic development to Cape Cod.
We will always be indebted to Harlyn, a great man whose vision, leadership, and countless contributions will continue to inspire and guide us in the years ahead.
