Harlyn Halvorson, Ph.D. 1925–2008 |
With
deep regret, the RTDC announces the passing of Harlyn
O. Halvorson, Ph.D., on June 17, 2008.
An active and
defining figure in the field of microbiology over the
past four decades, Harlyn was the RTDC’s guiding
light. He was the visionary behind the creation of the
RTDC through his role on the Falmouth Economic Development
and Industrial Corporation and is a Founding RTDC board
member.
Harlyn had a long and prestigious academic
career that reached a pinnacle in his role as Director
of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole,
MA. Prior to that, he served as a faculty member at
Brandeis University and founder of the Rosensteil Basic
Medical Sciences Research Center at Brandeis, where
he also served as director. He was an elected member
of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine and of the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Since his retirement, in
addition to establishing the successful Falmouth Technology
Park in Falmouth, MA, Harlyn has been an instrumental
director of the RTDC, helping us navigate the political
landscape to secure funding, building the RTDC’s
credibility with the institutions with which we now have
active affiliations, and advancing the commercialization
of science to bring new jobs to the Cape in the fields
of marine biology, ocean and environmental science, and
alternative energy.
We will greatly miss not only his
vision, leadership, and dedication, but his keen since
of humor and friendship. We offer our deepest condolences
to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those who
have been touched by this great man.
William Zammer,
Jr.
Chairman, RTDC
